Demand for Justice Grows: Delayed FIR in Tripura Student Killing Case
The father of a Tripura student who died in Dehradun following an alleged racially charged assault has accused local police of delaying the registration of a case, asserting that his son was brutally attacked for defending himself against racial slurs. Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student at a private university, passed away on Friday after fighting for his life for 17 days.
According to his father, Tarun Chakma, a Border Security Force jawan stationed in Manipur, the attack occurred on December 9 in the Selakui area when Angel stepped in to protect his younger brother from verbal abuse. Tarun claims that a group of six men hurled racial insults, referring to them as “Chinese” and “Chinese momo.” After confronting the attackers and asserting his Indian identity, Angel was reportedly assaulted with knives and blunt objects, sustaining injuries to his neck and back that proved fatal.
The grieving father alleged that police initially refused to file a complaint and only registered a first information report two to three days later, after pressure from the All India Chakma Students Union and intervention by senior police officials. Tarun characterized the incident as a brutal murder and expressed his determination to seek justice for his son.
In contrast, police have indicated that the incident stemmed from a quarrel at a local canteen involving five to six individuals. They reported that Angel suffered injuries to his head and back from a sharp-edged weapon and a blunt object during the altercation. Although he was rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh stated that the group was reportedly arguing among themselves when the confrontation escalated into violence.
Authorities confirmed that a complaint was registered on December 10, prompting an investigation. Three individuals were arrested on December 14, two minors were detained, and one suspect, believed to be from Nepal, is thought to have fled the country. Tarun shared that Angel and his brother Michael were at a market when a scooter and motorcycle carrying six people stopped near them. He alleged that Michael was pushed to the ground unprovoked, and when Angel intervened, the group turned aggressive, leading to the violent attack.
Angel’s last rites were performed in his native Machmara village in Tripura’s Unakoti district. His father highlighted that Angel was a final-year MBA student who had received a promising job offer, making his untimely death even more devastating for the family.
