Awaken Your Senses: Experience the Bliss of Coffee and Carnatic Music for Connoisseurs and Converts Alike!
Audience members gathered at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday for a unique Carnatic music experience during the second edition of the “Kaapi Raagam” event at Vinyl & Brew in Chennai. This initiative, organized by Iktaraa, aimed to introduce the timeless genre of Carnatic music to a broader audience in an unconventional setting, transitioning from the traditional sabha to a cozy coffee shop atmosphere.
The two-hour concert featured the talented vocalist Anugrah Lakshmanan, who was accompanied by skilled musicians: mridangam artist Mahesh Nemmarai, violinist V. Bargava Vignesh, and Muthalagi on the tambura. In addition to the performance, Lakshmanan fostered an engaging dialogue with the audience, discussing the history of the classical pieces and inviting questions about various aspects of Carnatic music. Audience members enjoyed their coffee and toasties while learning about practice routines and ways to appreciate the genre.
Damodharan K., a representative from Iktaraa, highlighted the importance of making Carnatic music accessible, especially for newcomers. “For someone listening to Carnatic music for the first time, it’s essential to explain the intricate technicalities, as one might not easily grasp where a song starts or ends,” he stated. The goal was to create an environment where anyone could walk in, feel part of a community, and develop a love for the music at their own pace.
Baskar B., a 60-year-old student of Carnatic music, expressed that the event format fostered a deeper connection between the audience and the performers. Fellow attendee Sangavi found the casual setting less intimidating as a beginner. Even for Lakshmanan, who regularly performs in traditional venues, this was a fresh experience. “There’s a common misconception that Carnatic music is boring, but events like this can attract a younger audience. They get a close-up view of the musicianship, including how the tambura is tuned, which encourages a more approachable interaction,” noted Vignesh.
Previously held in November, the “Kaapi Raagam” series is set to continue, with two more concerts planned for January at similar coffee shop venues. “This initiative will also provide a platform for emerging Carnatic musicians to showcase their talent,” added Abhinav from Iktaraa.
As Carnatic music seeks to captivate new listeners, innovative approaches like these not only break down barriers but also promise a vibrant future for this classical genre. By merging traditional art forms with contemporary environments, events like “Kaapi Raagam” create opportunities for connection, learning, and appreciation in an ever-evolving cultural landscape.
