Yogi’s Warning: Opposition Mustn’t Support Return of Bangladeshis
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued a stern warning to Opposition parties on Wednesday, cautioning them against supporting “illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas” when they are repatriated. He emphasized that crimes committed by these groups against Indian citizens and the atrocities suffered by Hindus in Bangladesh are intolerable.
During a discussion on the supplementary budget in the Assembly’s winter session, Adityanath stated, “I am warning you… do not come in support of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas when they are being shown the door.” He criticized the Opposition for holding candlelight vigils for atrocities in Gaza while remaining silent about the burning of a Dalit Hindu in Bangladesh, arguing that they should have condemned the attack in the Assembly.
In response to claims that the eligibility criteria for the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) were altered to favor a former police chief, he asserted that the former officer was appointed to combat the education mafia, just as other criminal elements have been confronted in the state.
Adityanath further alleged that Opposition parties helped illegal immigrants register as voters and obtain Aadhaar cards, but affirmed that a screening process would now be put in place to identify them. He claimed the Opposition is solely focused on vote banks, stating, “You shed tears over the Gaza attack but say nothing about a Dalit youth being burned alive in Bangladesh.”
He accused the previous political regime of fostering appeasement politics, insisting that if Bangladesh and Pakistan had not been formed, such violence against Hindus would not occur. He claimed that his administration has made appointment processes transparent and is committed to protecting the innocent while addressing lawlessness.
The Chief Minister criticized the Samajwadi Party for having made Uttar Pradesh a “Bimaru” state through what he called “policy paralysis,” asserting that his government has turned it into a revenue-surplus state. He also highlighted past failures of the SP to deliver justice to victims and indicated that his government has prioritized justice regardless of political affiliations.
Additionally, Adityanath announced ambitious infrastructure plans, stating that the state will soon have 22 expressways, contributing to approximately 60 percent of the expressway network in India. He intends to enforce stricter budgetary controls to ensure that funds are only released once previous allocations are properly utilized.
He concluded by acknowledging that despite significant investment in projects like the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre, many remain incomplete. His comments came in response to questions from the Leader of Opposition, Mata Prasad Pandey, regarding the necessity of a supplementary budget.
