Experience the Joy: Christmas Celebrations Shine in Northeast India
Kohima/Aizawl, Dec 24: The festive spirit of Christmas is alive and vibrant in the Northeastern region of India, especially in the Christian-majority states of Mizoram, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. Communities are embracing the season with joyful carol singing, special church services, and intricately decorated streets and homes, creating a warm atmosphere of celebration and devotion.
Most Northeastern states are preparing for Christmas celebrations on Thursday, although festivities began as early as Tuesday. In these regions, particularly in Mizoram, Nagaland, and Meghalaya, a deep-rooted enthusiasm is evident as communities come together to honor the birth of Jesus Christ. Churches, roads, and homes have been adorned with decorations, and Christmas is celebrated over several days, with community feasts organized on the second day to mark the occasion’s significance.
Mizoram, known for its lively Christmas celebrations, combines religious devotion with traditional fervor, making December a particularly special month for its people. As the month progresses, festive decorations fill churches, while harmonious Christmas carols resonate throughout the state. Villages, towns, and offices are adorned with Christmas trees, and various church bodies and NGOs, including the prominent Young Mizo Association (YMA), have contributed gifts to the needy.
On Tuesday, a Christmas Parade was held from Chanmari to Lammual in Aizawl, organized by the Mizoram Tourism Department and a local group. Mizoram’s Chief Minister Lalduhoma led the parade alongside his family, with Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar participating as well. The event featured performances by the Venghnuai Church Brass Band and unique costumes from the Mizoram Cosplay Organisation, showcasing the creativity of local talent. Students from the Institute of Music & Fine Arts presented traditional Mizo attire, and participants assembled at Lammual for a Christmas Carol Concert, marking the conclusion of the Winter Festival 2025.
Acting Nagaland Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla shared a message highlighting the importance of Christmas, which commemorates the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. He noted that the holiday reminds people of the enduring values of love, compassion, and service to humanity that foster harmony and respect among communities.
In Manipur, an inter-faith Advent Christmas celebration took place at Diamond Jubilee Park in Imphal, organized by the Imphal Naga Forum (INF). This gathering united leaders from various tribal communities, who collectively prayed for peace and healing in the region. The INF, recognized as a peace advocacy group, extended Christmas and New Year greetings to the peace-loving people of Manipur.
Manipur’s Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla expressed hope for peace and joy during Christmas, urging citizens to strengthen their bonds of unity toward a harmonious state. Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) addressed the significant impact of recent ethnic conflicts on their community’s ability to celebrate the holiday fully in previous years. KZC Chairman Henlianthang Thanglet emphasized the importance of family, love, and warmth during the festive season while reminding people that challenges remain.
More than six million Christians reside in Mizoram, Nagaland, and Meghalaya, with substantial numbers also in Manipur, Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, underscoring the widespread significance of Christmas across the region.
