New Arrests in Bangladesh: Urgent Developments in Hindu Lynching Case
Bangladesh authorities have arrested 12 individuals in connection with the lynching of a Hindu garment factory worker in Mymensingh district, allegedly over blasphemy. Police reports, cited by The Daily Star, indicate that the victim, Dipu Chandra Das, 25, was attacked by a mob in the Bhaluka area on December 18. Das, who worked at a local garment facility, was reportedly targeted after being accused of sharing social media content that offended religious sentiments.
According to police, Das was assaulted outside the factory premises. The mob is said to have severely beaten him, tied him to a tree, and hanged him. Afterward, his body was disposed of along the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway and subsequently set on fire before the attackers fled the scene.
Authorities recovered the charred remains and dispatched them to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Following this harrowing incident, Das’s brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a case at the Bhaluka Police Station on December 19, naming between 140 and 150 unidentified suspects in the murder.
Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials have stated that investigations are active, with efforts focused on identifying and apprehending all those involved in the lynching. Authorities have made it clear that mob violence and extrajudicial killings will not be tolerated, promising legal action against those accountable.
