Arunachal Youth Stand Firm Against Pork Sale Objections in Itanagar Market
The Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation (APIYO) and the Itanagar Youth Federation Arunachal (IYFA) are voicing strong opposition to concerns raised by members of the Muslim community about pork sales by local vendors near the Masjid in Ganga Market, Itanagar. The organizations emphasize that Arunachal Pradesh is predominantly tribal, with local communities maintaining their traditional food practices and livelihoods, including the sale of pork, which they argue is both customary and legal. They contend that no group should interfere with the cultural or economic practices of indigenous people.
In statements to the media, the president of IYFA declared that any imposition of restrictions on traditional food practices would not be accepted. He highlighted the necessity of fostering mutual respect and cultural sensitivity among the state’s diverse communities.
During a recent visit to the area, members of both APIYO and IYFA removed a sign identifying the locality as “Masjid Colony.” They argued that naming a neighborhood after a religious site could disrupt social harmony within a culturally varied society.
APIYO and IYFA advocate for the adoption of indigenous names for localities that celebrate the tribal identity and cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh. Suggested names include Donyi Polo Colony and Tani Colony, which they believe more accurately reflect local traditions.
Furthermore, the organizations urged local authorities to reassess and amend any official records or place names referring to “Masjid Colony,” asserting that these changes would help preserve indigenous identity while promoting communal harmony within the state.
