Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive discussions on the preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections during a visit to the state’s BJP headquarters on Saturday. The meeting focused on strategies to strengthen the party’s organizational base and included feedback on the government’s performance and public perception, as reported by party leaders.
Modi spent nearly an hour at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in the Basistha area, engaging in an informal interaction that emphasized ground-level input over scripted speeches. Veteran BJP leader Narayan Borkotoky described the atmosphere as relaxed, stating, “There was no formality. He interacted as a party worker with other party members and spoke at length about election preparations.”
Significantly, the Prime Minister did not sit on the dais but chose to mingle with party workers, discussing various organizational and political matters. He inquired about the party’s functioning, the status of election preparations, and the welfare of senior leaders in attendance.
The BJP aims to secure a third consecutive term in Assam in the Assembly polls scheduled for early next year. Around 280 leaders attended the closed-door meeting, including former state BJP presidents, current and former Members of Parliament, ministers, and Members of the Legislative Assembly. State BJP president Dilip Saikia remarked that this was the first occasion a sitting prime minister visited the party’s state headquarters.
Modi arrived at the venue following a 3.8-kilometer-long roadshow that began at Sarusajai. Earlier in his two-day visit to Assam, he unveiled a statue of the state’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bardoloi, inaugurated a new airport terminal, and addressed a public gathering. The Vajpayee Bhawan was inaugurated in October 2022 by BJP President J P Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
