Trump Expands Travel Ban: Discover Which 39 Countries Are Affected Now
The Trump administration has significantly expanded its travel ban, now affecting a total of 39 countries. This sweeping immigration action follows the arrest of an Afghan national, linked to the shooting of two National Guard soldiers during the Thanksgiving holiday. Earlier in June, the president announced travel restrictions from 12 countries, with citizens from seven others subject to strict limits.
As part of the new policy, the administration cited serious issues in many of the affected countries, including corruption, fraudulent identity documents, and inadequate criminal record systems. These factors complicate the ability of U.S. authorities to conduct thorough background checks on travelers. Additionally, several countries have high rates of individuals overstaying their visas in the U.S. or failing to accept their citizens back when deported. The lack of effective governance in some regions further exacerbates these challenges for U.S. immigration officials.
The comprehensive travel order delineates which countries are subject to bans or limitations for entry into the U.S., alongside the specific rules applying to each country. Citizens from the 12 countries previously subject to a full travel ban remain prohibited from entering the U.S., including Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
Newly added to the full ban are Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria. Individuals traveling with documents issued by the Palestinian Authority also face complete restrictions. Furthermore, two nations have transitioned from partial to full travel bans.
While some countries still face partial travel restrictions, including Burundi, Cuba, Togo, and Venezuela, the U.S. has lifted the ban for one country. New partial restrictions have been instituted for 15 additional nations: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Exceptions to the travel ban are available for U.S. green card holders, individuals with valid visas, athletes, diplomats, and others whose entry aligns with U.S. national interests. The order also tightens rules around family-based visas where fraud is perceived as a risk, but allowances can still be made on a case-by-case basis.
