Nagaland Congress Mobilizes Millions Against Alleged Vote Theft in Rally
A 13-member delegation from the Nagaland Congress participated in the “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod” Maha Rally on December 14, organized by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) at Ramlila Ground in New Delhi. They joined thousands of party workers and citizens in a mass mobilization aimed at defending democratic values and ensuring electoral integrity.
The Nagaland Congress team, which included AICC Minority Department National Coordinator Rajesh Kumar Sethi, was led by Supongmeren Jamir, the President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and a Member of Parliament. This delegation lent its voice to the rally, which saw lakhs of participants advocating for free and fair elections.
AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, spearheaded the rally, which attracted an estimated two to three lakh attendees from various parts of the country. Speakers raised alarm over perceived collusion between the BJP-led central government and the Election Commission of India (ECI), which they claimed has compromised the credibility of the electoral process.
Congress leaders reported that over five crore signatures have been collected nationwide against what they term “vote chori” or vote theft. Of these, more than two lakh signatures came from Nagaland, reflecting a strong democratic consciousness among the state’s citizens. The AICC plans to present these signatures to the President of India, seeking urgent intervention to protect democratic institutions.
During their addresses, Congress leaders voiced concerns that, despite multiple press conferences and the presentation of documentary evidence by Rahul Gandhi, the Election Commission has failed to respond. The party accused the ECI of maintaining silence during a crucial time, which they believe has eroded public trust in constitutional agencies.
A number of senior leaders and representatives from various frontal organizations in Nagaland attended the rally, including NPCC General Secretary Akunnuo, leaders from the NSUI and Indian Youth Congress (IYC) Nagaland units, the Mahila Congress President, District Congress Committee presidents from Dimapur and Kohima, and the Chairman of the NPCC Minority Department.
Reaffirming their position, the Nagaland Congress declared their commitment to continuing their democratic struggle against what they characterize as authoritarianism and institutional capture. They emphasized that they will pursue this issue in the streets, in Parliament, and before constitutional authorities until transparency, fairness, and accountability are restored in India’s electoral system.
