Tiwa Organisations Urge Assam CM: Key Demands for Rights Recognized

Several organizations within the Tiwa community, including the All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU), Tiwa Yuva Chatra Parishad (TYCP), All Tiwa Protection Committee (ATPC), and the Belt Block & Land Protection Committee (BB & LPC), have submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. They are calling for urgent action from the government to address longstanding issues concerning political representation, land protection, cultural identity, and various development matters.

The memorandum outlines eight key demands aimed at promoting the rights and welfare of the Tiwa community. First, the organizations are seeking the establishment of a Tiwa Autonomous Council under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. They are also urging the government to conduct the General Election for the Tiwa Autonomous Council in accordance with the TAC Act of 2005.

Another significant demand is to halt the inclusion of six larger, more populous ethnic communities in Assam’s Scheduled Tribe list. The Tiwa organizations are calling for the immediate abolition of land mutation and transfer processes, as well as the eviction of illegal encroachers from protected lands in tribal areas.

Additionally, they are pushing for the formation of a Regional Council for the Tiwa community residing in Karbi Anglong, in line with the provisions of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. The memorandum also requests an end to the construction of a hydroelectric dam project in West Karbi Anglong (Tharakunchi), as the community believes this will adversely affect their environment and livelihoods.

The Tiwa community members are advocating for their recognition as a Scheduled Tribe in Meghalaya State, and they are calling for an amendment to Indian constitutional terminology to replace “Lalung” with “Tiwa.” This demand reflects their desire to affirm their cultural identity.

The collective appeal from these organizations highlights the urgent need for government action to safeguard the interests of the Tiwa community while fostering their cultural heritage and political autonomy.
