Rising Tensions: Munir’s Cautionary Warning to India on Military Readiness
Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir issued a veiled warning to India on Saturday, asserting that the Pakistan Army is prepared to confront any threats from both internal and external sources. Recently appointed as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Munir now holds comprehensive authority over the country’s military.
During a visit to the Gujranwala and Sialkot garrisons, he was briefed on the operational readiness of the forces and initiatives aimed at enhancing combat preparedness. Munir emphasized, “The Pakistan Army remains fully focused on both internal and external challenges, including hostile hybrid campaigns, extremist ideologies, and divisive elements that threaten national stability,” as stated by the army in a recent announcement.
While interacting with officers and soldiers, Munir praised their high morale and unwavering commitment to national security, stressing the importance of rigorous training. He also observed a field training exercise and an advanced simulator training facility, commending the army’s professional standards and readiness.
He highlighted the need for technological adaptability in modern warfare, which demands agility, precision, situational awareness, and rapid decision-making. This call for advanced capabilities comes in a context where Munir’s remarks regarding “internal and external threats” have been interpreted as a subtle reference to a potential future conflict with India. Furthermore, this internal focus relates to the ongoing challenges posed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a terrorist group designated as “Fitna al-Khawarij” by the previous government, referencing a violent historical faction.
Earlier this year, India initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, following an attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives. Additionally, last month, the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif passed the contentious 27th Constitutional Amendment, which granted extensive powers to the military establishment and lifelong legal immunity to Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, positioning him as the de facto leader of the country for the foreseeable future.
