Tirthank Pegu Shines Bright with Silver in 200m Butterfly at Asian Youth Games
Assam’s young swimming star, Tirthank Pegu, made headlines by winning a silver medal in the 200-metre butterfly event at the Asian Youth Games 2024 held in Bahrain. On Thursday, October 30, he showcased an impressive performance, finishing with a time of 2:02.56, which secured him second place in a highly competitive final.
Pegu’s achievement comes just behind Iran’s Mohammad Mahdi Gholami, who took home the gold medal with a time of 2:01.75. Wang Yi Shun from Hong Kong claimed the bronze with a finish of 2:03.45.
Upon returning to Assam, Tirthank was greeted warmly at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. An enthusiastic crowd, including family members, supporters, and officials from the Assam Swimming Association, gathered to celebrate his remarkable accomplishment.
In an interview, Pegu expressed his gratitude and dedication to his father’s dreams for him. He stated, “This achievement is small compared to the dreams my father had for me. His dream was much bigger, and I want to honour it by representing India in the Olympics one day.”
With this significant podium finish, Tirthank Pegu has solidified his status as one of India’s promising talents in competitive swimming, igniting hopes for further international success in the future.
