Urgent Update: Khaleda Zia Hospitalized, Condition ‘Extremely Critical’
New Delhi: Khaleda Zia, the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, is in critical condition as her health has significantly worsened, according to close aides. The 80-year-old Zia was admitted to a hospital on the night of November 23 after suffering from a chest infection that has impacted both her heart and lungs.
In light of her deteriorating health, the state-run news agency BSS reported statements from BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who indicated that prayers for her recovery are being organized. He stated, “Last night, doctors said her condition is extremely critical.” Alamgir encouraged citizens to pray for Zia after Friday prayers, expressing hopes for her return to public life and her ability to serve the nation again.
Zia is currently receiving treatment in the Critical Care Unit of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where medical personnel have identified infections in her lungs and heart. Reports suggest that she has been battling multiple health issues, including liver and kidney complications, diabetes, arthritis, and eye disorders. She is the widow of President Ziaur Rahman, and her only surviving son, Tarique Rahman, has been residing in London since 2008. Tragically, her other son, Arafat Rahman, passed away from a cardiac arrest in 2025.
In the wake of political turmoil that saw violent protests in August of the previous year and a shift in power from Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, the BNP has experienced a resurgence, positioning itself to regain influence and secure electoral victories in an increasingly transformed political landscape in Bangladesh.
