Orchid Music Fest: Elevating Sikkim’s Global Cultural Presence
The upcoming Orchid Music Festival 2025, scheduled for December 13 at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, promises to elevate Sikkim’s profile on the international stage. Soreng-Chakung MLA Aditya Golay emphasized that the festival will not only enhance the concert tourism sector but also support local businesses, stating, “International music festivals can boost Sikkim’s concert economy and benefit local businesses.”
Headlining the festival are renowned pop bands “Blue” from the UK and “Everglow” from South Korea. They will be joined by prominent regional artists, including Bhutanese singer Sonam Wangchen, Nepalese artist Nitesh Jung Kunwar, and Sikkim’s own Lepcha fusion band, Sofiyum. This festival marks Sikkim’s first foray into international music events, showcasing a vibrant mix of global and local talent.
In a press conference, Golay extended his best wishes to the event’s organizers and urged support from Sikkim’s legislators, ministers, and community stakeholders to help advance this crucial concert tourism initiative. The festival is being organized by SONJU Ltd, a Gangtok-based group of local youths focused on promoting concert tourism in collaboration with Shillong’s Rockski EMG and with backing from the Government of Sikkim. This event is part of the state’s 50th Statehood celebrations.
The MLA highlighted the governmental vision for a burgeoning concert economy, referencing earlier remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the state’s anniversary celebrations. Modi articulated the Union government’s commitment to fostering a concert economy in Sikkim, viewing its scenic beauty and tranquility as ideal for such endeavors. Aditya pointed out that Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay is actively encouraging local youth to organize high-caliber music events.
The state government is also providing logistical and administrative support for the festival, which is organized by the local community. Golay pointed out the multifaceted benefits of hosting international music festivals, noting that fans traveling to see top artists would likely stay in Gangtok for several days and explore the state’s tourist attractions. This influx would support local hospitality businesses and tourism providers while simultaneously enhancing Sikkim’s international visibility through high-profile performances.
The inaugural Orchid Music Festival aims to deliver world-class entertainment and firmly establish Sikkim on the global concert tourism map. Organizers believe that such initiatives can significantly transform the state’s tourism landscape and economic prospects.
