The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), in partnership with the Office of the Development Commissioner (MSME) and the Ministry of MSME, Government of India, launched a Two-Day National Level Intellectual Property (IP) Yatra Programme at The Shillong Club in Police Bazar, Meghalaya, on Thursday, November 27. This initiative aims to bolster the intellectual property ecosystem in the North East by raising awareness about innovation, technology transfer, and IP protection among entrepreneurs. The programme attracted over 75 participants, including MSMEs, start-ups, innovators, students, researchers, and representatives from academic institutions.
Shri Gaurav Joshi, Joint Director of MSME-DFO Guwahati, highlighted Meghalaya’s vibrant innovation landscape in his keynote address, mentioning that the state boasts approximately 10 Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged products. He encouraged entrepreneurs to seek out unique products with GI potential and elaborated on government schemes designed to promote technology adoption and business growth.
Cultural icon Dr. Lou Majaw provided insights into protecting creativity in the music sector through effective copyright and intellectual property strategies. Meanwhile, Dr. Mantu Bhuyan, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-NEIST in Jorhat, presented commercially viable technologies available for transfer to local industries and advocated for collaborations with research institutions.
In his welcome address, Mr. A. Tovi Chophi, Chair for the North East Region at PHDCCI, underscored the necessity for innovation-driven business models supported by timely IP protection, reaffirming the chamber’s commitment to fostering a proactive IP culture in the region. Dr. Jatinder Singh, Deputy Secretary General of PHDCCI, emphasized that hosting the National IP Yatra in Meghalaya represents a significant effort to empower entrepreneurs with IP knowledge through dedicated facilitation centers, seminars, and capacity-building initiatives.
Following the inaugural session, technical discussions led by experts from United & United, PRIME Meghalaya, CSIR-NEIST, and SIDBI took place, covering topics such as patents, trademarks, GI, patent filing processes, prosecution, commercialization, and creating successful IP-driven enterprises. The two-day event will continue with sessions on patent opposition, infringement, and enforcement, alongside an IP Helpdesk Camp aimed at providing tailored IP support to MSMEs and innovators.
