Tragic Death Sparks Outrage: Man Killed in Tripura Witchcraft Incident
A 55-year-old man named Jaban Bakta Jamatia was tragically killed by villagers in Sidu Hathai Kami Khuipolwng, South Tripura district, on Wednesday. The incident stemmed from accusations of black magic. Reports indicate that a group of villagers stormed Jamatia’s home early in the morning, dragged him outside, and assaulted him, resulting in his immediate death. Authorities have registered a case and initiated an investigation, though no arrests have taken place as of now.
Jamatia’s wife, Surja Rani Jamatia, 50, is reportedly facing severe threats and has been coerced into silence, preventing her from speaking about the incident. The couple’s two children also feel endangered. Witnesses described a heartbreaking scene, recalling the desperate cries of Jamatia’s granddaughter, who pleaded for her grandfather’s life during the attack. Neighbors noted that the sound of her terrified and confused cries is something they will never forget.
While there hasn’t been an official response from authorities yet, preliminary information suggests that the murder is rooted in deep-seated superstition. Activists express concern that despite advancements in education and governance, such tragic events continue to occur, indicating that superstition often overrides reason and compassion in these vulnerable communities.
“This incident transcends mere murder — it serves as a stark reminder that unchecked beliefs can turn deadly,” stated Dr. Sunil Kalai, a local social worker and Tripura University professor. He emphasized the need for an immediate and unbiased inquiry, the arrest of those responsible, and comprehensive support for the affected family. Kalai also called for stricter legal measures and enforcement to prevent future instances of mob violence.
