Kalita Community’s Urgent Call for Tribal Rights: Prepare for December Stir
The Sadau Asom Kalita Alpain Yanagosthi Sanmilan has publicly criticized the Assam government for neglecting the longstanding demands of the Kalita community. During a press conference at the Nalbari Press Club on November 27, the organization expressed its deep dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of issues that have been raised by the community for years, calling for immediate action.
The association has frequently urged the state government to engage in structured and inclusive dialogue to address the core problems faced by the Kalita people. Recently, a delegation from the organization met with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accompanied by ministers and MLAs, submitting a memorandum for a coordinated discussion on key concerns.
Pratul Kalita, the Working President of the association, voiced the community’s feelings of being misled by a subsequent meeting at the Chief Minister’s Office. He stated, “During the November 25 meeting, only two or three points were discussed, while the real fundamental issues were ignored. We do not support any superficial or misleading discussions carried out in the name of dialogue.”
Kalita emphasized that any meaningful talks should include all major bodies representing the Kalita community. “If the government truly wants dialogue, it must invite every organization of the Kalita community and conduct a thorough, point-by-point discussion to arrive at concrete solutions. Since this is not happening, we are preparing for a large-scale agitation across Assam,” he added.
Starting in December, the association plans to initiate district-wide protest programs to “alert the government” to their plight. While reiterating their preference for dialogue, the organization criticized the government’s unwillingness to take constructive steps, asserting that this is “pushing the community towards agitation.”
The association demands that the proposal to grant tribal status to the Kalita community be discussed during the ongoing Winter Session of the Assam Assembly. They are also seeking measures to tackle educational, social, and economic disparities, as well as reservations for the community across all sectors. Additional demands include securing land rights for Kalita people living in the BTR tribal belt and protecting their traditional lands and livelihoods.
Issuing a political warning, the leaders stated that they are closely monitoring the actions of Kalita ministers and MLAs, declaring they would “ensure their defeat in the 2026 Assembly election” if they fail to support the community’s demands. The organization concluded that only structured, sincere, and inclusive dialogue can truly address the pressing issues faced by the Kalita people.
