India Strongly Protests China’s Treatment of Arunachal Woman at Airport
India has officially lodged a strong demarche with China following the harassment of an Indian citizen at Shanghai Pudong Airport. Pema Wangjom Thongdok from Arunachal Pradesh was subjected to mistreatment by Chinese immigration officials, prompting concerns from the Indian government. Sources report that India communicated its profound worries and objections to the Chinese authorities, emphasizing that Thongdok was detained on “ludicrous and unacceptable grounds.” The Indian government reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India, and its residents have the right to hold and travel on Indian passports.
In response to the incident, the Indian Consulate in Shanghai acted swiftly, assisting Thongdok and raising the issue with local governmental bodies. This intervention ultimately led to her release after nearly 18 hours of distressing ordeal.
India’s communication also pointed out that the actions of the Chinese officials violated international standards, notably the Chicago and Montreal Conventions that oversee civil aviation and passenger treatment. Thongdok later described her experience, revealing that Chinese immigration officers mocked her Indian citizenship, exacerbating her emotional turmoil until officials from Indian missions in Shanghai and Beijing ensured her safe passage.
The incident has intensified existing diplomatic tensions, with India stating firmly that such behavior is unacceptable and goes against established international aviation protocols.
