The Rise of the Straw Hat Jolly Roger: A Gen Z Protest Symbol Explained
A prevalent symbol at Gen Z protests worldwide has been the pirate flag, characterized by a skull and crossbones or a jolly roger adorned with a straw hat. Historically, the Jolly Roger was employed by pirates to strike fear into the hearts of approaching ships. In the popular Japanese manga series “One Piece,” created by Eiichiro Oda, the skull dons a straw hat and a grin, representing the peculiar group known as the Straw Hat Pirates, led by the rubber-bodied Monkey D. Luffy.
This graphic novel series debuted in 1997, which is also the year that delineates the end of the Millennial generation and the beginning of Gen Z. “One Piece” has now entered its final saga, expected to conclude within a few years. Luffy, the central character, leads a diverse crew that battles oppressive rulers and a corrupt ‘World Government.’ Uniting under the straw-hatted Jolly Roger, these so-called outlaws symbolize liberation and resilience, appealing to a generation that has grown disillusioned with authority. As a result, the Straw Hat Pirates have evolved into emblems of modern protest.
The jolly roger first appeared prominently at pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Indonesia and New York in 2023.
