Adivasi Groups Unite in Kokrajhar: Urgent Call for ST Status Recognition
Adivasi organizations have intensified their demands on the Central and Assam governments following a significant rally in Kokrajhar, where thousands called for urgent action on long-standing commitments, especially the demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The demonstration, organized by the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) and eight affiliated groups under the Coordination Committee of Adivasi Organizations, commenced at Dimolmgaon Playground and marched to Green Field. Participants expressed frustration over what they view as years of government inaction regarding crucial issues linked to the Adivasi peace accord and broader welfare initiatives.
AASAA president Godwin Hembram stated that the peace agreement made with Adivasi militant groups has seen minimal implementation, leaving rehabilitation and development efforts stagnant. He urged the authorities to take immediate action on promised socio-economic programs, warning that continued delays are undermining community trust. Protesters also called for daily wages to be revised to Rs 551, the distribution of land pattas, and formal recognition of Adivasis as Scheduled Tribes. Leaders emphasized that this recognition is vital for securing constitutional protections and fostering long-term progress.
The march concluded peacefully at Green Field, but organizers warned that their campaign would escalate if the government does not respond swiftly to their demands.
