Tinsukia District Empowers 237 Tribal Families with Forest Rights in Sadiya
The Tinsukia district administration in Assam granted Forest Rights Act (FRA) titles to 237 families from three forest villages in Sadiya on Sunday. This significant event coincided with Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2025, aimed at upholding the long-overdue land and resource rights of genuine forest dwellers, thereby marking a crucial step towards justice for tribal communities.
In a notable initiative that bolsters grassroots empowerment, the administration conferred land rights to families from Ambikapur Sonowalgaon, Ambikapur Bodogaon, and Kopoupathar Sonali Gaon. Officials highlighted that this recognition will play a vital role in securing the livelihood, dignity, and identity of forest-dependent communities in the Sadiya subdivision.
The administration announced via social media that this landmark event was the first time FRA titles were awarded to 237 families in these villages. This development is seen as a new beginning in acknowledging the rights of forest dwellers in Tinsukia district.
Notable figures present at the event included Sri Bolin Chetia, the Hon’ble MLA of Sadiya; Sri Swapneel Paul, the District Commissioner of Tinsukia; and other dignitaries. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs of the Government of India also acknowledged the occasion.
Officials regard this event as a potential turning point in Sadiya’s tribal rights movement. They emphasized that the FRA empowers indigenous families to protect their land from eviction, access forest resources legally, and engage in conservation initiatives. A senior official stated, “Recognizing rightful ownership is not just a legal duty; it restores trust and strengthens our bond with the tribal communities who have protected these forests for generations.”
The ceremony aligns with the government’s Dharti Aaba Abhiyan, a campaign designed to honor tribal heritage and ensure constitutional protections. Authorities declared their commitment to continue verifying outstanding claims to guarantee that no eligible family is overlooked.
