MMRDA Takes Action: Fines for Contractor After Tragic Worker Fall
Two days after a supervisor tragically fell to his death from a metro construction site on Mira Road near Mumbai, authorities have taken action against those responsible. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed a fine of ₹50 lakh on the contractor, N A Constructions, and ₹5 lakh on the general consultant, Systra, due to alleged safety violations.
The MMRDA has initiated a comprehensive investigation into safety practices at the worksite. This inquiry will assess whether the contractors adhered to required safety protocols, including the use of harnesses, guardrails, and appropriate supervision, and whether the consultant effectively monitored these safety measures. Based on the findings, further administrative or legal action may be pursued against the involved parties.
The incident occurred in Saibaba Nagar while construction materials were being arranged for a metro station. Farhan Ahmed, 42, was overseeing the activities when he stepped aside to avoid a swinging steel section. Unfortunately, he lost his balance and fell from a height of approximately 60 to 70 feet. He was immediately transported to the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital in Bhayandar, where he was pronounced dead. An accidental death report has been filed by the police.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that safety protocols were not consistently enforced at the site. While the contractors are responsible for implementing safety measures, the general consultant holds the duty of ensuring compliance with these established guidelines. The imposed penalties followed MMRDA’s review of the circumstances surrounding the fall, which identified negligence on both sides.
An MMRDA official stated, “The inquiry is being conducted by the general consultant of Metro Line 4 to ascertain the exact cause and lapses. To assist the family of the deceased, we have provided ₹5 lakh in compensation, and insurance benefits will also be offered. Additional actions will be determined following the inquiry report.”
