Assam’s Remarkable Victory: Women Players Shine with Gold at National Pickleball Championship in Bengaluru
In a remarkable display of athleticism, women athletes from Assam have brought pride to the state by achieving outstanding success at the National Pickleball Championship held in Bengaluru. The Assamese players secured two historic gold medals along with several other awards, showcasing their exceptional talent in the competition.
The championship took place from November 13 to 16, with a 25-member team from Assam participating. Organized by the Karnataka Pickleball Association under the Indian Pickleball Association, which is recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Indian Sports Authority, the event attracted around 1,100 players from across the country, ranging from 12 to over 70 years old, competing in various team and individual events.
Among the notable winners was Anangsha Alomyan, who clinched the gold medal in the women’s singles category for players aged 30 and above. She triumphed over top player Priyanka Mehta from Maharashtra in the semifinals with a score of 11-7 and went on to win the national title in the finals.
In the category for girls under 16 doubles, the duo of Naeem Husein and Prati Barua emerged as national champions, displaying excellent coordination and confidence by defeating Madhya Pradesh’s team in a decisive match with a score of 11-3.
In team events, the girls’ team under 16 won a silver medal. The team, consisting of Prati Barua, Naeem Husein, and Utpalakshi Shaikia, defeated teams from Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in the group stages, but lost in the finals to Maharashtra, earning a commendable silver medal.
The women’s team in the 30 and above category won a bronze medal after creating a stir by defeating Gujarat in the quarterfinals. However, they faced defeat in the semifinals against Maharashtra.
Assam’s medal tally was impressive in individual events as well. Gold medals were secured in the women’s singles for players aged 30 and above by Anangsha Alomyan and in the under-16 girls doubles by Naeem Husein and Prati Barua. The silver medal in the women’s singles went to Upasana Nath, who advanced to the finals after defeating Preeti Kumar with a score of 11-4 in the semifinals, setting up an all-Assam final.
Additionally, the bronze medal winners included Nazneen Rahman in the women’s singles for players aged 50 and above, who made headlines by defeating last year’s national champion, Kavita Khanna, with a score of 11-7 in the quarterfinals. Tiken Chandra Basumatari secured a bronze in the men’s singles for players over 60, and the team of Monaswini Hazarika and Anangsha Alomyan won bronze in the women’s doubles for players aged 30 and above.
Clearly, Assam has achieved significant success at the 2024 National Pickleball Championship, and the impressive performances of the women athletes have once again brought the state into the national spotlight.
