In Pakistan, the opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), led by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), has announced a series of protests aimed at restoring the Constitution to its original form following the controversial 26th and 27th Constitutional Amendments. The TTAP declared that next Friday will be marked as a ‘Black Day’ in Pakistan to protest the resignation of judges from the nation’s top court over these amendments.
Recent media reports indicate that the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which was signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday, significantly expands the powers of Army Chief General Asim Munir, who will now also serve as Chief of Defence Forces, consolidating command of the Navy and Air Force under his authority. Additionally, the amendment establishes a new Federal Constitutional Court (FCC), which will have its own chief justice appointed by the government. This court is set to manage constitutional issues, disputes between various governmental bodies, as well as many cases that were previously under the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction. The FCC will assume crucial functions of the Supreme Court, particularly in cases involving fundamental rights.
In a social media update, the TTAP mentioned that an emergency meeting took place yesterday, attended by key figures including PTI Chairman Barrister Ali Gohar, Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal, and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai, among others. During the meeting, participants collectively agreed that the current government is incompetent and warned that Pakistan stands on the brink of civil war. A press release from the TTAP criticized the amendments, asserting they undermine the basic structure of the Constitution and constitute an assault on the judiciary, which is fundamental to democracy. Earlier that day, Justice Aminuddin Khan was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of the newly established FCC.
