The administration of Mizoram’s Lawngtlai and Siaha districts has decided to seal the Myanmar border due to a rising gastroenteritis outbreak, with the death toll now reaching nine, according to state health department officials on Saturday. The government has declared four villages in the affected districts as containment zones.
Lawngtlai’s deputy commissioner, Donny Lalruatsanga, reported that six deaths occurred in Kakichhuah village, including one that took place Friday night. Approximately 30 individuals exhibiting symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever have been identified in that village. It is believed that villagers may have contracted the illness from individuals traveling from Salachhuah village in southern Chin state, Myanmar. “Both Kakichhuah and Hruitezawl villages, which serve as a major entry point from Myanmar, have been designated as containment areas,” he stated.
In addition to the medical teams from the Lawngtlai district, experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Doctors Without Borders are closely monitoring the situation. Senior Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lalmuanawma Jongte indicated that among the deceased in Kakichhuah village are three refugees from Myanmar and three local residents. A ‘Rapid Response Team’ has been established to provide treatment to the sick and to implement measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
Dr. Jongte explained that samples of sick individuals and water from local sources have been sent to Zoram Medical College & Hospital in Falkawn near Aizawl for laboratory testing, with results anticipated soon. Furthermore, three additional deaths have been reported in Lodaw village, also in the neighboring Siaha district, where nearly 30 people have fallen ill in Lodaw and Lomasu villages.
Meanwhile, reports from the United League of Arakan (ULA) and its armed faction, the Arakan Army (AA), indicate that over 300 people have become ill with gastroenteritis symptoms in Shin Letwa and Paletwa districts of southern Chin state, Myanmar, with at least 30 individuals currently receiving medical care.
