From Family Breadwinner at 11 to World-Famous Perfume Entrepreneur: A Journey of Resilience and Inspiration
Ms. Jo Malone CBE, the acclaimed British perfumer and founder of the renowned fragrance brands Jo Malone London and Jo Loves, recently shared her inspiring story of resilience and entrepreneurship during an episode of CNBC’s “Executive Decisions” podcast, hosted by Steve Sedgwick. In this candid discussion, Malone reflected on her challenging upbringing, revealing how becoming her family’s breadwinner at just 11 years old laid the groundwork for her future success.
Founded in 1994, Jo Malone London was acquired by The Estée Lauder Companies in 1999, providing Malone a substantial financial windfall. However, her journey to success began long before that. Growing up in a council estate in Kent, UK, Malone faced the dual challenges of a father who struggled with gambling and an unstable family environment. “From the age of 11, I was really the one who was the adult that would say: ‘Have we got enough money for the electric and gas meter?’ Because I knew that if he gambled all the money, there’d be nothing to eat,” she recalled.
Her mother, working in the beauty industry, suffered a breakdown during Malone’s teenage years, forcing her to step up and support the household. With school becoming a lower priority, Malone tapped into her creativity by replicating her mother’s face creams and selling them for £4.50 ($5.90) to clients in London. “That is how I kept our family together,” she explained, while also recounting the financial strain that often plagued her household.
Malone’s resourcefulness extended to selling her father’s paintings to secure food for the family, along with attending poker games where she learned to read marked cards. These formative experiences imbued her with an entrepreneurial spirit that would eventually guide her career. “I kept saying to myself: ‘When I grow up, I’m not going to live like this. I’m not going to have a family like this’,” she stated, emphasizing her determination to change her circumstances.
Reflecting on her teenage years, Malone expressed feelings of loneliness due to her responsibilities at home, which deprived her of typical adolescent experiences like sports or socializing. Yet, she recognizes these hardships as instrumental in nurturing her independence and entrepreneurial drive. “It was survival in the beginning,” she noted, recalling her early jobs in flower shops, restaurants, and dog walking.
Malone eventually realized that her early ventures laid the foundation for her career. “When I started that first business of skincare, that’s when I knew that I was in charge of my own life,” she said. “And that’s when the entrepreneur, although I didn’t know what the word entrepreneur meant, that’s when the entrepreneur really took hold.”
Currently, Malone resides in Dubai and remains active in the entrepreneurial realm with the recent launch of a luxury spirits brand, Jo Vodka, alongside her fragrance business, Jo Loves. Her compelling story exemplifies how her challenging childhood experiences spurred her into becoming an influential figure in the beauty industry.
