Arunachal’s High-Powered Committee Reviews Critical Freedom of Religion Act Rules
The Government of Arunachal Pradesh has established a High Powered Committee (HPC) to review the draft rules developed under the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978. This initiative, announced by the Department of Indigenous Affairs, replaces a previous order issued on August 14, 2025.
Chaired by retired Justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey, the HPC comprises high-ranking government officials, ministers, and representation from various religious and indigenous organizations. These groups include the Arunachal Christian Forum, Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh, Monpa Mimang Tsogpa, Tai Khamti Development Society, Arunachal Vikas Parishad, and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, A.P.
The committee’s primary responsibility is to evaluate the draft rules with reference to the directives from the High Court and relevant constitutional provisions. Its duties involve recommending necessary changes, seeking input from related departments and experts, and producing a report with suggestions to be submitted to the government within the timeframe set by the High Court.
The formation of the HPC highlights the state government’s commitment to ensure that the Freedom of Religion regulations adhere to constitutional principles and judicial guidance, while also considering the diverse interests of the various communities in Arunachal Pradesh.
