New Delhi/Srinagar, Nov 12: Investigators have revealed that the explosive-laden car that detonated in Delhi’s Red Fort area was part of a carefully orchestrated attack, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition on December 6. This plot was allegedly masterminded by Dr. Umar Nabi, who was driving the vehicle during the blast on November 10, and was associated with an interstate “white-collar” module of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) operating from Faridabad.
Chilling details emerged following the interrogation of eight suspects and extensive questioning of their families, friends, and neighbors, enabling investigators to uncover the broader terror network involved in the explosion. Umar, a 28-year-old doctor from the Pulwama district of south Kashmir, is believed to have perished in the blast that claimed 12 lives. He played a pivotal role in a terror network that spanned across Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
Officials stated that Umar revealed his December terror plans to accomplices and began preparing by placing explosives in the Hyundai i20 he was driving on the day of the attack. It appears he was trying to assemble a vehicle-based improvised explosive device (VBIED), having learned how to construct it from online resources. On November 10, he may have panicked after hearing a top Faridabad police officer announce on television the dismantling of a terror module with 2,900 kg of explosives, including 360 kg of inflammable materials linked to a Dr. Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, an associate who taught at Al Falah University in Faridabad.
On the evening of November 10, Umar reportedly sought refuge in a mosque within the walled city, staying there for three hours before leaving. His attempt to detonate the VBIED ultimately led to a premature explosion, as key components like shrapnel were missing.
According to officials, Umar was described as a loner with an impressive academic background. His transformation began after a trip to Turkiye in 2021 with Ganaie, the first suspect arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police. Following that trip, Umar allegedly started accumulating explosives such as ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and sulfur, storing them around the Al Falah campus where he was studying.
Of the eight arrested individuals, seven are from Kashmir, including Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil, Yasir-ul-Ashraf, and Maqsood Ahmad Dar alias Shahid from Srinagar, Maulvi Irfan Ahmad from Shopian, Zameer Ahmad Ahanger alias Mutlasha from Ganderbal, Dr. Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie alias Musaib from Pulwama, and Dr. Adeel from Kulgam. The eighth suspect, Dr. Shaheen Sayeed, is from Lucknow.
On October 26, Umar returned to Kashmir and spent time with relatives and friends before heading back to Faridabad. During this visit, he informed those close to him that he would be unavailable for three months, a statement corroborated by several friends and family members. This likely indicated his intention to deploy the VBIED and then go into hiding.
However, the investigation took a turn after the arrest of Ganaie, which stemmed from a crackdown on posters promoting JeM in Srinagar on October 19. CCTV footage captured Ganaie and others involved in this activity, which helped unravel the inter-state terror network connected to the plot.
