CSU Demands Accountability from NHIDCL for NH-29’s Dire Conditions
The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has urgently called for intervention from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) regarding what they term the “continued negligence and unsatisfactory performance” of M/s Ranta Infrastructure Projects Pvt. Ltd., the contractor for the ongoing NH-29 Package-II construction project between Chakhabama and Kikrüma. In a letter sent to the Executive Director of NHIDCL’s Regional Office in Kohima, the CSU articulated its “deep concern and strong indignation” over the project’s deteriorating condition, asserting that repeated appeals and official actions have not improved the “deplorable and hazardous” road conditions for commuters.
The CSU criticized the project for “poor workmanship, lack of progress, and complete absence of accountability,” which they stated have caused severe hardships for travelers, transporters, and local residents. In a meeting held on May 14, 2025, organized by the Deputy Commissioner of Phek, both NHIDCL and the contractor committed to maintaining the road in a motorable state throughout the monsoon season, promising that construction would resume “in full strength” by the second week of October 2025, contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
To gain clarity on the project’s progress, the CSU filed a Right to Information (RTI) request on November 3, 2025, seeking details regarding both the physical and financial status of the two-lane project. The Union expressed regret over the lack of improvement despite numerous assurances from both the contractor and NHIDCL, accusing the contractor of failing to meet contractual obligations and NHIDCL of not implementing effective corrective measures or penalties.
The CSU emphasized that such negligence and inaction are unacceptable for a project deemed of national importance. They demanded that NHIDCL take “immediate and decisive intervention” by initiating “stringent disciplinary and contractual actions” against the contractor, while ensuring that work is expedited with visible progress and adherence to quality standards. The Union warned that failure to address these issues would lead to public agitation and democratic actions against both the NHIDCL and the contractor, asserting that they would hold them “fully responsible for any consequences arising thereof.”
