Bengal Government Appoints Women’s ODI Star Richa Ghosh as DSP
Kolkata, November 8 (IANS) The West Bengal government has appointed Indian women’s cricket team wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh as Deputy Superintendent (DSP) in the state police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee presented the appointment letter to Ghosh at a vibrant ceremony held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, organized to celebrate her accomplishments.
During the event, Ghosh was also honored with the Banga Bhushan award, and the Chief Minister gifted her a golden bat and a golden ball on behalf of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). Additionally, Ghosh received a cheque of Rs 34 lakhs, a tribute to her scoring 34 runs in the final of the Women’s World Cup.
Sourav Ganguly, former captain of the Indian cricket team and ex-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, attended the ceremony. He remarked on Ghosh’s performance in the final match, stating, “Richa’s job when she came to bat at number six was the most difficult since she got a lesser number of balls to play. The asking rate was quite high then. However, she played skillfully and made the difference.” Both Banerjee and Ganguly expressed their belief that Richa will one day captain the Indian women’s cricket team.
Reflecting on her preparation for the tournament, Ghosh shared, “During the net practice, I always fix a target. This helps me. I love accepting challenges when playing in difficult situations. I love to play a role in ensuring the victory of my team.”
The Chief Minister also voiced her aspirations for Ganguly, stating that she wishes to see him as the head of the International Cricket Council (ICC) one day. “He was the captain of the Indian cricket team for so many years. He has also handled cricket administration well. He should have been the head of the ICC, and I believe he will be in that position one day. No one will be able to stop him,” Banerjee said.
