Haq’s Release Approved: Court Rejects Shah Bano’s Daughter’s Plea
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has dismissed a petition from Shah Bano Begum’s daughter aimed at halting the release of the Hindi film “Haq,” which is inspired by her mother’s well-known legal battle. The court ruled that the right to reputation and privacy is not inherited, stating that such rights cease upon a person’s death. Consequently, the filmmakers were not required to obtain consent from Shah Bano Begum’s daughter, allowing the film to move forward with its release scheduled for Friday.
Justice Pranay Verma, who issued the ruling after reserving the order on November 4, emphasized that the right to privacy or reputation ends with a person’s life. “Since Smt Shah Bano is no longer alive, her right of privacy and reputation has come to an end with her,” he stated, referencing past judicial decisions. The details of the ruling became public on Thursday. This decision paves the way for “Haq” to portray the significant aspects of Shah Bano’s legal legacy without familial objection.
