CM Rio Advocates for Naga Unity and Indigenous Rights Protection
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasized the importance of unity among Naga communities during the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Tenyimi Union Dimapur (TUD) held at the DDSC Stadium on Wednesday. He urged citizens to set aside their differences for the greater good of the state and highlighted the need to protect the rights of indigenous people.
In his address, Rio praised the Tenyimi Union for its five decades of efforts in fostering peace, harmony, and brotherhood among various tribes in Dimapur. He stated that unity is essential for progress and dignity within Naga society. Rio also pointed to historical acknowledgments of Naga identity, referencing the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 and Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution, which showcase how both British and Indian governments have recognized the unique cultural heritage of the Nagas.
“Whether within the Indian Union or beyond, we must remain proud of our roots and steadfast in our values. Our unity must define our journey forward,” Rio asserted. He stressed that reconciliation and dialogue among different Naga factions are crucial for achieving lasting peace.
With an eye on future generations, he underscored the role of education and faith in cultivating awareness, urging the populace to champion good governance, collective responsibility, and the rule of law. He warned against rising individualism, clanism, and tribalism, stating that such trends undermine the spirit of “Nagaism,” which is anchored in values of unity, respect, and integrity.
Addressing indigenous rights, Rio identified the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system as a crucial measure for safeguarding these rights. However, he emphasized that the system’s success hinges on active participation from citizens and civil society, rather than solely relying on government enforcement. He called upon all communities to collaborate, asserting that cooperation and vigilance are essential to preserve Nagaland’s identity and promote inclusive development.
