Sensex Plunges 519 Points as Foreign Outflows Continue to Pressure Markets
The benchmark Sensex fell by 519.34 points, or 0.62%, closing at 83,459.15 on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty decreased by 165.70 points, or 0.64%, to settle at 25,597.65. This decline was attributed to profit-taking in utility, metal, and IT stocks, exacerbated by weak global cues and ongoing outflows from foreign funds. During the trading session, the Sensex reached a low of 83,412.77, with 25 of its 30 constituents finishing lower.
Power Grid was the largest loser, down 3.13% after reporting a drop in profits for the September quarter. It was followed by declines in stocks such as Eternal, Tata Motors PV, Tata Steel, Maruti, and Bharat Electronics. In contrast, Titan emerged as the standout performer, gaining 2.28% on strong second-quarter earnings, with other stocks like Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, and SBI also experiencing gains.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹1,883.78 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹3,516.36 crore. Among sectors, utilities fell by 1.56%, metals by 1.40%, IT by 1.06%, and power by 0.99%. Conversely, telecom and consumer durables saw slight gains of 0.93% and 0.11%, respectively. The BSE smallcap index decreased by 0.69%, while the midcap index fell by 0.26%.
Market sentiment was subdued due to rising US bond yields and diminishing expectations for a near-term rate cut by the Federal Reserve. In Asia, markets including South Korea, Japan, China, and Hong Kong ended lower, and European markets also faced declines, although US markets were mostly in the green. Additionally, Brent crude oil prices fell by 1.34% to $64.02 per barrel. Indian markets will observe a closure on Wednesday in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti.
