Tripura Aims for Top 10 Status for Agartala Medical College: CM Saha’s Vision
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure, aiming to elevate Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) into the top ten medical institutions in India. This announcement came during the foundation-laying ceremony for several new projects at AGMC and GBP Hospital on November 3.
Among the inaugurated projects are the Critical Care Building (CCB), a Communicable Disease Center (CDC), and a 20-bed special ward at GBP Hospital. Additionally, a digital telemedicine link with the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute in Lucknow and an Inter-Departmental Call Management System (IDCMS) were launched.
Emphasizing the significance of medical education and professional excellence, Chief Minister Saha, who oversees the Health portfolio, noted that there are currently 400 MBBS seats available across Tripura’s medical colleges. He encouraged students to strive for better examination performance. “Hospitals such as GB, TMC, and other district facilities are showing notable improvement,” he stated, but also raised concerns about brokers in GB and TMC Hospitals directing patients to private facilities outside the state. He assured that strict measures would be implemented to combat these activities.
Saha mentioned that the state has completed eight hip replacement surgeries, along with several knee replacements and other advanced procedures. He reported that AGMC Hospital is expanding its capabilities to offer a wider range of specialized treatments. “Nine super-specialty services have already been launched at AGMC, costing around Rs 250 crore, with four more services to follow,” he added. He recently consulted with the Union Health Minister to secure financial support for these initiatives, receiving assurances that the Central Government would aid in procuring essential medical equipment.
The Chief Minister highlighted the necessity of skill enhancement and professional development among Tripura’s doctors, urging them to pursue national recognition. “Our collective goal should be to bring AGMC within the country’s top 10 medical colleges. This requires dedicated effort from all stakeholders,” he remarked.
Additionally, a new Mother and Child Care Building is set to be constructed at AGMC and GBP Hospital, funded with Rs 192 crore from the DoNER Ministry, and Rs 202 crore has been allocated for infrastructure development at the Tripura Dental College.
