Cyclone Montha: Rain and Chill Sweep Through Northeast India
Rain and cold weather associated with Cyclone Montha have ushered in a winter-like atmosphere across northeastern India. Regions including Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh recorded significant rain in the past 24 hours, leading to a marked drop in daytime temperatures, as reported by meteorological officials. The remnants of the cyclone have contributed to this unusual weather pattern, which typically sees winter arriving in Assam around November. A senior official from the India Meteorological Department noted, “Due to continued cloud cover from the cyclone, daytime temperatures have significantly decreased, although nighttime temperatures have remained slightly above average.”
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported Hayuliang in Arunachal Pradesh received the most rainfall, measuring 16 cm. This was followed by Dhemaji in Assam with 8 cm, Hawai in Arunachal Pradesh at 7 cm, and Gossaigaon in Assam with 6 cm. The official emphasized that the rain and cloud cover primarily impacted Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh.
In the northeastern mountainous areas, snowfall has delighted tourists, especially in the popular destination of Tawang, where the strategic Bumla Pass was blanketed in snow over the last two days. This early snowfall has been welcomed, contributing to the winter charm that entices visitors. Jigme Gyaltsen, a local hotel owner, expressed optimism about tourist numbers, stating, “While it’s been a slow start this year, the earlier snowfall compared to last year is encouraging. We hope for an increase in visitors wanting to experience Tawang’s winter beauty.”
In Assam, the unseasonable rain could pose challenges for the agricultural sector, specifically impacting traditional rice varieties as harvesting has yet to commence in several areas. Sanjay Kumar Chetia, director of research at Assam Agricultural University, indicated, “High-yielding varieties are generally resilient to lodging, but traditional crops might suffer in these wet and windy conditions. Conversely, crops like mustard and second-season plants may benefit from the rainfall.”
