Cultures Unite: Experience the Vibrant Youth Festival at Gauhati University
Guwahati, Nov 1: The vibrant campus of Gauhati University has come alive with color and energy, marking the beginning of its anticipated annual youth festival on Saturday. For the next four days, attention will shift from academic pursuits to a celebration of creativity, transforming the university grounds into a hub of music, dance, and cultural expression.
This year’s inter-college festival has attracted over 700 participants from 60 colleges spanning 18 districts of Assam, reinforcing its status as one of the region’s premier events. The inaugural ceremony featured the raising of the university flag by Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma, followed by flags from the GU Sports Board and the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) raised by Dr. Ranjan Kumar Kakati and Manash Pratim Kalita, respectively.
A significant moment in the ceremony was the solemn Swahid Tarpan, honoring the martyrs. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta emphasized the festival’s importance, stating, “The Youth Festival is an extravaganza that celebrates creativity, camaraderie, and the vibrant diversity of our university community. Each year, it provides an extraordinary platform for students to learn from each other, appreciate different art forms, and strengthen the spirit of unity that defines Gauhati University.”
The day featured a colorful cultural rally, where students creatively expressed themes that ranged from the Ramayana to Unity in Diversity, showcasing aspects of Rural Assam, Assamese marriage traditions, cinema, agriculture, fishery, and puppetry. Special tributes were paid to music legends Zubeen Garg and Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika for their lasting impact on Assamese culture.
Dr. Kakati remarked, “The diverse cultures of the state have come alive through a series of performances, making the GU campus resemble a mini Assam.” The opening day was filled with lively competitions across various categories, including Borgeet, classical and light classical vocal music, Rabindra Sangeet, and folk songs. The afternoon highlighted solo classical and folk dance performances, poem recitations, and the Magazine Dugout event.
The festival is set to continue with an array of performances and competitions in music, dance, theatre, fine arts, and literature, celebrating the creative heartbeat and cultural heritage of Assam through its youthful performers.
