Meghalaya Unveils First Government Engineering College for a Tech-Driven Future
Meghalaya has taken a significant step in advancing higher technical education with the launch of the first academic session at the Shillong Government College of Engineering in Mawlai, marking the state’s inaugural government engineering college. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who inaugurated the session, hailed the event as a pivotal moment for the state’s educational and technological development. He emphasized that Meghalaya aims to emerge as a burgeoning IT hub in Northeast India, bolstered by projects like the second phase of the Shillong IT Park and the Tura IT Park.
During his address, Sangma pointed out recent collaborations with global technology leader NVIDIA, highlighting that such partnerships will open new opportunities for the youth and enhance the state’s digital economy. He urged students to “dream big” and actively engage in shaping Meghalaya’s future.
In conjunction with the launch of the engineering college, the foundation stone was also laid for new infrastructure at Shillong Polytechnic. This new development will feature an RCC building equipped with workshops, laboratories, an examination center, smart classrooms, and facilities for faculty, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving technical education in the region.
