Sambit Patra’s Strategic Tripura Visit: Inside BJP’s Critical Review Talks
As internal conflicts deepen within the Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and tensions rise in its partnership with the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), Dr. Sambit Patra, the BJP’s North East Coordinator and Member of Parliament, arrived in Agartala on Tuesday. His visit aims to facilitate high-level discussions to stabilize the party amidst increasing organizational uncertainty.
Dr. Patra’s unexpected arrival coincides with a leadership gap, as the tenure of state president Rajib Bhattacharjee has lapsed several months without a successor being named, leading to a sense of limbo in the party’s state leadership.
Sources indicate that Dr. Patra conducted closed-door meetings with several key figures, including Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Rajib Bhattacharjee, various ministers, MLAs, and senior party officials. The primary focus of these discussions has been to address factional disputes, enhance organizational cohesion, and improve collaboration with Tipra Motha ahead of upcoming TTAADC and Village Committee elections. Additionally, BJP’s Tripura in-charge, Dr. Rajdeep Roy, also joined the consultations to help mitigate the party’s internal differences.
This series of developments follows a late-night meeting on Monday between Chief Minister Dr. Saha and Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. Reports suggest that their conversation revolved around the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, the timeline for Village Committee elections, and critical tribal concerns, including land rights-issues that have contributed to the rising friction between their respective parties. This meeting aims to alleviate tensions following recent unrest that the BJP attributed to Tipra Motha, a claim that Debbarma has firmly denied.
Political speculation is swirling that a cabinet reshuffle or expansion may be on the horizon, as Chief Minister Saha has reportedly been holding individual meetings with several ministers in recent days. With the BJP’s internal structure under scrutiny and alliance dynamics shifting, Tripura’s political landscape remains tense, as the ruling party endeavors to re-establish unity and stability in preparation for a crucial electoral period.
