Karnataka’s Electronics and IT Minister, Priyank Kharge, sharply criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 27, accusing him of misrepresenting his statements for political gains and trying to obscure his own failures. This exchange follows Sarma’s derogatory comments, referring to Kharge as a “first-class idiot” and reports that the Assam government might file a case against him.
Kharge clarified that his remarks regarding semiconductor investments were intended to comment on industry practices rather than serve as a political attack. He revealed that major semiconductor companies were being pressured to set up operations in Gujarat and Assam due to coercion from the central government, which allegedly overlooked Karnataka’s robust technical landscape.
He firmly stated, “The BJP and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma are twisting my words. My statement was clear — it was about semiconductor companies being pressured to set up in Gujarat and Assam, even when they had expressed a clear preference for Karnataka because of our engineering talent and ecosystem.”
In light of the heated exchanges, Kharge emphasized that Sarma should be more concerned with pressing issues such as unemployment and farmer distress instead of engaging in “political gimmicks.” He pointed out that after a decade of BJP rule, Assam continues to fall short in critical areas like health, education, and economic development.
Further criticizing Sarma’s comments on corruption, Kharge remarked, “Every scam or corruption case seems to trace back to his doorstep.” He argued that when Congress regains power in Assam, the party will prioritize restoring public trust in governance and liberating citizens from the fear stemming from what he described as the political choices of a “third-rate crook.”
Earlier, Sarma had accused Kharge of “insulting the Assamese people” and called on the Congress party to denounce Kharge’s statements.
