Brook’s Brilliant Ton Undone as England Faces Disappointment in 1st ODI vs NZ
Harry Brook delivered an explosive performance, hitting 11 sixes in a remarkable innings of 135, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for England as they suffered a four-wicket defeat to New Zealand in the first one-day international on Sunday at Mount Maunganui. Brook’s effort came after England found themselves in deep trouble at 4-2 in the second over and later at 56-6, ultimately finishing their innings at 223 runs from 35.2 overs. New Zealand successfully chased down the target, reaching 224-6 with 80 balls to spare.
Among other England players potentially heading to the Ashes series in Australia next month, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, and Sam Curran all struggled, scoring just 2, 2, 2, 4, and 6 runs, respectively. New Zealand started poorly as well, losing Kane Williamson for a golden duck in his first international match in seven months and slipping to 24-3. However, Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell steadied the innings, combining for a vital 92-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Bracewell scored 51 after being dropped at slip early in his innings, while Mitchell finished unbeaten on 78, also benefiting from a dropped catch.
Brook’s innings was a bright spot for England despite the loss. He accounted for over 60% of his team’s total runs, recorded his second ODI century, and surpassed 1,000 runs in ODIs during the match. Brook’s performance was highlighted by partnerships with Jamie Overton, who scored 46, and Luke Wood, who contributed 5 runs. Apart from Brook and Overton, the rest of the English batting collapsed, struggling to put runs on the board.
“I felt like I was in good touch,” Brook reflected after the match. “Obviously, we didn’t get off to a great start, and I tried to take it on myself to have a counterpunch and fortunately it came off today.” He acknowledged that despite a strong start with the ball, England struggled to capture wickets in the middle overs.
New Zealand’s captain, Mitchell Santner, faced uncertainty after winning the toss and choosing to bowl, but his decision paid off as England’s top order fell apart. The match started with Matt Henry’s first ball, which bowled Jamie Smith, leading to a disastrous start for England. Zak Foulkes, making his ODI debut, took quick wickets, including that of Duckett and Root, leaving England at 5-3.
As England’s innings unfurled, Brook’s aggressive play turned the tide momentarily. He reached his half-century with a six, scoring 50 runs off just 36 balls. Brook and Overton’s partnership marked a significant recovery before Brook accelerated towards his century by hitting three consecutive sixes off Jacob Duffy.
With the second match of the series set to take place in Hamilton on Wednesday, England looks to regroup and recover from this setback after a turbulent start.
