Funding Showdown: Congress Promises Rs 1,000 Cr for Barak, BJP Matches for Silchar
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on October 24 that his government has initiated projects worth ₹1,000 crore for Silchar city alone, contrasting this with the previous Congress government’s announcement of the same amount for the entire Barak Valley. Speaking at an event in Silchar, Sarma reminisced about the time when former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi made the ₹1,000 crore announcement, describing it as revolutionary. However, he questioned whether the region ever received the full funding promised.
Sarma emphasized the current government’s tangible achievements, saying, “Today, under our government, in a single day we are laying the roadmap for projects worth over ₹1,000 crore for Silchar city alone.” He highlighted significant upcoming projects in the area, including a ₹300 crore development at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, a ₹100 crore bridge at Madhura Ghat, and a major flyover project.
He noted that these projects alone account for more than ₹600 crore in investments and, with additional ongoing and planned projects, the total investment for Silchar exceeds ₹1,000 crore. This announcement underscores the BJP government’s renewed emphasis on infrastructure development in the Barak Valley, marking a notable effort toward urban transformation in Silchar and its neighboring regions.
