Delhi could witness its first artificial rain on October 29 as cloud seeding preparations have been finalized, according to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. This announcement comes amid growing concerns about the deteriorating air quality in the national capital, which remains hazardous following Diwali celebrations. In a post shared on X, Gupta revealed that the meteorological department anticipates cloud formation between October 28 and October 30.
“Preparations have been completed for cloud seeding in Delhi. Today, experts conducted successful tests in the Burari area,” Gupta stated. She emphasized that if weather conditions are favorable, residents may experience artificial rain on October 29.
Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique aimed at enhancing precipitation by introducing small particles, such as silver iodide and potassium iodide, into the atmosphere. These substances act as ice nuclei, facilitating the formation of rain or snow by clustering around moisture present in the clouds. The process typically involves aircraft injecting these materials into targeted clouds, thereby increasing their ability to produce precipitation.
The effectiveness of cloud seeding relies on various factors, including the availability of natural ice nuclei and atmospheric moisture. While artificial rainfall can help alleviate drought conditions in water-scarce areas, it is also deployed in urban settings to disperse fog and smog.
On the same day, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that a trial run of cloud seeding was successfully conducted by IIT Kanpur. The flight, which traced a route from IIT Kanpur through several locations including Meerut and Burari, aimed to test the operational capabilities of the cloud seeding equipment. “This flight was essential for assessing the aircraft’s readiness, the performance of the seeding fitments, and coordination among all involved agencies,” Sirsa elaborated on X.
As Delhi grapples with alarming air quality, the city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) in the ‘very poor’ category for four consecutive days post-Diwali. Many areas have reported an AQI classified as ‘severe,’ marking one of the worst periods for air quality in four years. As of Thursday, Delhi was ranked as the fifth most polluted city in India, reflecting ongoing environmental challenges and the urgent need for effective solutions.
With this upcoming cloud seeding initiative, officials hope to provide some relief from the toxic haze enveloping the capital. The anticipated rain could not only improve air quality but also set a precedent for future weather modification efforts in the region.
