Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the 9th edition of the Captain N. Kengurüse Memorial Football Tournament 2025 on Wednesday at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima. During the opening ceremony, he emphasized the state government’s commitment to developing astro-turf football grounds across all districts, aiming to enhance modern sports facilities in Nagaland.

Dr. Rio highlighted that the tournament serves not only as a celebration of football but also as a tribute to Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, a revered hero of Nagaland, whose bravery and sacrifice during the Kargil conflict continue to inspire many. “This tournament, dedicated to his memory, reminds us of the values he represented-bravery, discipline, teamwork, and dedication to duty,” he stated, adding that Captain Kengurüse embodies the resilient spirit of Naga youth and the highest ideals of service to the nation.

The Chief Minister underscored the importance of sports in fostering unity and character among youth in Nagaland, urging participating teams to play with integrity and respect. He encouraged them to honor Captain Kengurüse’s legacy, not just through victories but also by graciously accepting defeat.

Dr. Rio discussed the success of the 2024 Nagaland Super League, recognized as the Best New League in India, and mentioned the impact of tournaments like the Dr. T. Ao Trophy and NSF Martyrs’ Trophy on the state’s football landscape. He pointed out that football is generating employment opportunities and driving Nagaland’s creative economy, with the second season of the Nagaland Super League set to launch soon, promising even greater participation.

Lt. Gen. Abhijit S. Pendharkar, the General Officer Commanding Spear Corps, remarked that the tournament transcends sports, paying homage to an exceptional soldier and national hero. He noted that Captain Kengurüse’s sacrifice reflects Nagaland’s rich martial traditions and continues to inspire young Nagas to strive for excellence and serve with dedication.

Moreover, the General Officer mentioned that the Indian Army and Assam Rifles organize the memorial tournament not just to honor the past but to build future connections. “Through this game, we strengthen the bond between the armed forces and the people of Nagaland, nurturing talent, promoting peace, and creating opportunities for our youth,” he affirmed, pledging ongoing support for such initiatives.

K. Neibou Sekhose, president of the Nagaland Football Association, expressed his delight in partnering with the Assam Rifles to provide footballers an opportunity to showcase their talent and thanked Chief Minister Dr. Rio for his continued support of sports in the state. Neiselie Kengurüse, the father of the late Captain K. N. Kengurüse, also addressed the gathering.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Ministers G. Kaito Aye, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Temjenmenba, S. Keoshu Yimkhiung, W. Chingang Konyak, and MLAs Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu and Benei M. Lamthiu.
