FMD Outbreak Among Mithuns: Urgent JE Confirmation in West Siang Pigs
An outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has been confirmed among Mithuns in the Kamba circle of West Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, along with reports of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) affecting pigs in the same area, officials announced on Wednesday. So far, 18 Mithuns, a species of bovine significant to the region’s culture and economy, have died from FMD. In response, the district administration has implemented a ban on the transport and sale of all hooved animals, including Mithuns, pigs, cattle, and sheep.
To curb the spread of these diseases, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has established a quarantine checkpoint at Wak village, located on the Aalo-Kamba-Mechuka Road, which serves as a boundary between the Aalo and Kamba circles. Dr. T. Kamchi, who is investigating the outbreak, emphasized the urgency of these measures since FMD can spread rapidly among hooved animals.
The department is also receiving support from volunteers of the Tani Ao Mithun Farmers’ Welfare Society. The quarantine will remain in effect until health officials deem it safe to lift. Dr. Kamchi added that an outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis has been confirmed in pigs within the Kamba circle. The disease was first noted in Libu Bene village and has since been spreading to neighboring areas. Confirmation of the outbreak came from the ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology (NIVEDI) in Bengaluru.
In Gemo Tali village, there have been reports of pig deaths linked to JE; importantly, this village has not been affected by FMD. The Animal Husbandry Department is actively implementing treatment and preventive strategies to manage the ongoing health crises among livestock.
