Unlocking Hope: CM Commits Rs 700 Crore for Dampa Development in Mizoram
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on October 20 that the state government is allocating over Rs 700 crore to address the ongoing water shortage in the Dampa assembly segment of Mamit district. Speaking at the launch of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) Dampa East block election campaign in Reiek village, he emphasized that the government is prioritizing the development of Mamit, recognized as one of India’s aspirational districts. The Dampa assembly bypoll is set for November 11.
During his address, the Chief Minister outlined various initiatives currently underway, such as the construction of link roads to connect remote farmlands, and the establishment of eight warehouses for storing broomsticks and other agricultural products. Additionally, he referred to the Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission, which involves a total investment of Rs 33.94 crore and will be executed in three phases. This mission aims to increase rubber cultivation in Mamit district, which borders Tripura and Bangladesh.
Lalduhoma also reported that 14 villages have received water connections, and new storage facilities are under construction to ensure a reliable supply of water. He revealed plans for a new incubation centre in the Dampa area-the first of its kind in Mizoram-with an initial phase budget of Rs 35 crore already allocated.
ZPM candidate Vanlalsailova expressed confidence in securing a victory in the upcoming bypoll. Voting will occur on November 11, with vote counting scheduled for November 14. Other candidates in the race include Dr. R. Lalthangliana, senior vice-president of the Mizo National Front (MNF) and former health minister, John Rotluangliana, Congress vice-president and former minister, and BJP leader Lalhmangaiha. K. Zahmingthanga, vice-president of the People’s Conference (PC) party, is expected to submit his nomination on Tuesday, the final day for nominations.
Nomination papers are set to be scrutinized on October 22, and candidates must withdraw by October 24. This bypoll was prompted by the death of MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21. The Dampa constituency has 20,790 registered voters, including 10,185 women, according to the final electoral roll issued on September 30.
