Harvest Resumes in Lapangap Amid Rising Assam-Meghalaya Tensions
Farmers in Lapangap village, situated along the Assam-Meghalaya border in West Jaintia Hills district, resumed their paddy harvesting on Tuesday amid stringent security measures. This marked the end of a standoff that had halted their work since October 9. The resolution resulted from collaborative efforts by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and community leaders who worked together to ease tensions between the conflicting groups.
In a demonstration of solidarity, villagers from Lakaroi, primarily of the Karbi community, came forward to assist the Prar villagers of Lapangap in their harvesting. This effort was crucial, especially since over 60 families rely on paddy fields located in the disputed area between Lapangap and Tapat village, as indicated by local officials.
Tensions had escalated on October 9 when residents of Tapat, in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, reportedly obstructed farmers from Lapangap from harvesting in a disputed field. The resulting unrest tragically led to the death of one individual from Tapat, prompting authorities to enforce a night curfew in Lapangap from 6 PM to 10 AM.
Officials highlighted that the interruption in harvesting negatively impacted farmers’ livelihoods and commended both communities for their cooperation in resolving the situation. As major harvesting activities resume under close supervision, security personnel continue to be deployed around the agricultural fields to prevent any potential incidents.
