Tragic Loss: Kerala IT Professional’s Death Sparks Police Investigation into Disturbing ‘Sexual Harassment’ Allegations
A police investigation has been initiated following the tragic death of 26-year-old IT professional Anandu Aji, whose case has raised serious allegations of sexual harassment. A resident of Kottayam, Aji was found dead in a lodge in Thampanoor on October 9. Investigators have charged Nidheesh Muralidharan, a family friend from Kanjirappally, under IPC Section 377, which pertains to unnatural sexual offenses.
The Ponkunnam police, where the alleged harassment took place, will be re-registering the First Information Report (FIR) and commencing a detailed investigation. Aji’s family has been actively involved in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and in a 15-page note shared on Instagram, the young man made troubling claims against Muralidharan, whom he referred to as ‘NM’. He accused Muralidharan of chronic sexual abuse starting during his childhood, causing him severe mental distress and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although Aji cited these allegations in his video testimony, he admitted he lacked concrete evidence to support his claims.
In the aftermath of Aji’s death, the RSS issued a statement categorizing the allegations as “dubious and baseless,” and they have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The complexity of this case has sparked widespread protests, with demonstrators from organizations such as the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the Youth Congress demanding a transparent inquiry. Notably, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra highlighted the case in a public forum, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Initially, Thampanoor police registered the case as an unnatural death. However, upon review of Aji’s note and video, they sought legal counsel to transition the investigation into a more serious inquiry. This tragic incident has underscored the critical need for sensitive and comprehensive responses to allegations of abuse and mental health crises.
Support and resources are available for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, including a state health helpline at 104, Tele-MANAS 14416, and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline at 044-24640050.
As this case unfolds, the public and officials alike continue to call for justice in Aji’s name, shedding light on the severe implications of mental health struggles and the importance of supportive communities in addressing such issues.
