Rahul Honors Zubeen’s Legacy, Demands Urgent Investigation into Death
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has called for a transparent investigation into the death of acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg, expressing the need for justice and honoring his legacy. Gandhi made these statements during a visit to Zubeen’s cremation site in Sonapur, on the outskirts of Guwahati, where he paid his respects to the artist who had a profound impact on Assamese culture.
“It is the duty of the government to quickly and transparently investigate what has happened and inform the family about the events in Singapore,” Gandhi said, underscoring his commitment to clarity amid the tragedy. Following the cremation, he visited Zubeen’s family in Kahilipara, accompanied by Congress state president and deputy leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Gaurav Gogoi.
When questioned about advocating for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for Zubeen, Gandhi stressed he wanted to keep the focus on mourning and honoring the singer. “We love Zubeen Garg and wish to honor him, but first, we need transparency and justice. Everyone in Assam deserves to know what happened in Singapore, and the sooner, the better,” he emphasized.
Zubeen Garg passed away under disputed circumstances while swimming in Singapore on September 19. He had arrived in the country on September 17 for a scheduled performance at the North East India Festival.
Gandhi recalled an iconic dialogue from Zubeen’s Assamese film “Kanchanjangha,” where he stated, “When I was 17, I took a mountaineering course in Sikkim. Each day, I gazed at the majestic Kanchenjunga. I admired the mountain for its honesty, transparency, and unshakable beauty. It resonated with me, as Zubeen himself embodied those very qualities.”
In addition to his acting, Zubeen directed and starred in “Kanchanjangha,” which narrates the story of a rebellious young man challenging corruption. Gandhi noted the tragedy affects the entire state, adding, “I spoke with the family, and their sole request was for the truth to be clear. We all loved Zubeen, and the people of Assam, whose lives he touched, deserve to know what transpired.”
The Congress leader acknowledged Zubeen’s father, Kapil Thakur, for raising an influential figure in Assamese music and culture, and expressed profound gratitude for the family’s contributions. “It’s so sad to come here under these circumstances,” Gandhi remarked. “I had hoped for a happier occasion.”
Offering condolences to the people of Assam, he recognized the shock of losing someone so beloved without warning. “You have lost someone incredibly important and loved. I stand with you in your grief,” he concluded.
