ECI Acts Swiftly Against Money Power, Seizes ₹33.97 Crore!
The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a directive on October 15 to various enforcement agencies to prevent the influence of money in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. This announcement comes as part of their ongoing efforts to ensure fair electoral practices. The ECI has deployed Expenditure Observers to oversee the election process, emphasizing the importance of monitoring candidate spending.
Since the announcement of the elections on October 6, different enforcement agencies have seized assets amounting to ₹33.97 crore, which includes cash, liquor, drugs, and other freebies intended to sway voters. The ECI aims to curb the use of money power by providing strict guidelines to numerous agencies, including the State Police, Income Tax Department, and the Enforcement Directorate, among others.
The election body clarified that the Expenditure Observers have already begun monitoring candidate expenses and have arrived in their respective constituencies to carry out these duties effectively. They are also expected to collaborate with all teams tasked with monitoring expenditures.
Moreover, the ECI has established flying squads and surveillance teams that will be on alert around the clock to identify and address any attempts to misuse money or other incentives to influence voters. To facilitate real-time reporting of seizures made by these teams and enforcement agencies, the ECI has activated the Election Seizure Management System (ESMS).
In their statement, the ECI stressed the need for enforcement authorities to ensure that ordinary citizens are not inconvenienced or harassed during inspections aimed at implementing these directives. Citizens are encouraged to report any violations using the C-Vigil App, ensuring a transparent and accountable electoral process.
