Watch: Donald Trump Celebrates Friendship with PM Modi While Behind Him, Shehbaz Sharif’s Reaction Speaks Volumes!
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about India and Pakistan’s future relations during the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Speaking to reporters, Trump remarked that he believes the two countries can “live very nicely together,” drawing laughter from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was present behind him. “India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top. He has done a fantastic job,” Trump said, smiling for the cameras.
Co-hosting the summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Trump praised Pakistan’s military leadership and emphasized that regional peace relies on cooperation and positive actions among friends. He gestured toward Sharif and playfully stated, “He is going to help make that happen, right?” Following Trump’s comments, Sharif took the opportunity to thank him for his contributions in reducing nuclear tensions between India and Pakistan, highlighting the potential catastrophe that could have ensued without Trump’s intervention during critical discussions. “Had it not been for this gentleman…who knows? India and Pakistan are both nuclear powers…the war could have escalated to a level where no one would have lived to tell what happened,” Sharif acknowledged.
Trump continued to reiterate his role in de-escalating tensions in previous remarks, noting his contributions to preventing conflicts. Speaking before the Knesset in Israel, he included the standoff between India and Pakistan among the “eight conflicts” he claimed to have played a part in mitigating. Just a day prior, on May 10, he announced a “full and immediate” ceasefire between the two nations, although India asserted that the understanding stemmed from direct military communications.
The Gaza Peace Summit also marked a significant moment for India, as it was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh-the first Indian minister to meet Trump since Operation Sindoor. Singh attended the summit as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy. In a post on social media platform X, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed India’s support, stating, “India welcomes the signing of the landmark peace agreement and hopes this will lead to lasting peace in the region.”
Prime Minister Modi also lauded Trump’s “unwavering peace efforts” in facilitating the ceasefire deal. In a post on X, he celebrated the release of 20 remaining hostages who had been held captive by Hamas for over two years, recognizing their freedom as a testament to the resilience of their families and the diplomatic efforts of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. “We welcome the release of all hostages… We support President Trump’s sincere efforts to bring peace to the region,” Modi stated.
The summit concluded with Trump endorsing a landmark ceasefire agreement alongside leaders from the Arab and Muslim world, signaling what he termed a “new and beautiful day” for the Middle East after years of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
This announcement and the collaborative spirit displayed at the summit underscore significant steps toward regional stabilization and ongoing diplomatic efforts to address longstanding disputes.
